I cannot recommend Mr Khan too highly, I was first referred to him after a routine retinal screening showed some abnormalities in late 2013. During my first appointment, he explained that I would need laser surgery – as a result of diabetes difficulties. As you’ll appreciate, this wasn’t the easiest message to receive – but it was delivered professionally and appropriately, he never sugar coats the situation, which ultimately is appreciated by patients. Mr Khan stayed when most were leaving the clinic – on New Year’s Eve, to ensure that I was treated as rapidly as possible – removing my risk and answering the myriad of questions that I had, he treated me again around a week later and then in early February. I find his style to be very direct, but supportive – he knows when to push me, to ensure that I receive appropriate treatment (even when I really don’t necessarily want to go through it!) but is also extremely sensitive and listens to any queries and answers questions fully. He is also very reassuring, happy to show me the details of scans – and share with me the progress that my eyes are making, even though this must take longer than just telling the patient to get on with it! Despite having some very serious eye procedures – I have had an excellent experience with the whole team in Bedford, all of the support team are highly professional and extremely friendly in what must be a difficult environment. One particular experience that I feel should be mentioned, was when a much older lady (possibly over ninety) who was very nervous and was having a sight test – one of the nurses in Bedford sat with her to reassure her, speaking very slowly, quietly but clearly and explained everything that would happen. This obviously took a lot of time, but I believe made a massive difference to the individual – and would have been without any form of recognition. The only slight negative that I can mention is the appointment booking process, in Bedford – clearly Bedford are oversubscribed, resulting in extended appointment times. This is certainly no reflection on Mr Khan – and I am delighted to say that it has never impacted my care. On one occasion, I had an appointment date proposed that was 10 weeks after an initial appointment, when I should have been followed up after 4-6 weeks, however this was quickly remedied with a few phone calls/emails. Mr Khan is also well connected – knowing of recent developments in the field, which reassures me that I am receiving the best possible care. Overall, I have full trust in Mr Khan and have no hesitation in wholly recommending him as an expert in his field.
Dr Khan and Ingrid both put me at ease, talked me through the procedure, the aftercare, gave general tips/advice for maintaining a healthy/clean eye and were really friendly, whilst being professional throughout.
Mr Khan is an excellent colleague to work with. He is always approachable and willing to help. He has an outstanding level of knowledge concerning eye diseases and he is more than happy to offer his opinion whenever needed. He is trustworthy and respects patients and colleagues. I have no hesitation to state that he is one of the best colleagues I have worked with.

Mr Khan allowed me to sit in on his retinal clinic for an afternoon, as hospital experience is required to complete my optometry degree. Really impressed with his high level of knowledge and professional manner. I was really taken back by the high level of service which Dr. Khan gave. He treated my case with extreme sensitivity, listened to the vast history and picked up on the vital parts of the information to help solve my case. As a medical student you get to observe the care offered by a wide range of doctors. From my brief experience with Mr Khan, he appeared to be a very competent consultant. His communication skills were certainly above par, leading to excellent rapport with most of the patients. He was also able to create multiple learning opportunities for me in the clinic resulting in a very valuable introduction to ophthalmology.
Mr Khan was extremely helpful today. He dealt with my relative thoughtfully and kindly, explaining carefully and in an easily understandable way about the condition she had and what had occurred. He was able to reassure her whilst advising the possible future implications for her condition and suggest what she should be aware of and do should her sight deteriorate further. This proved to be a very positive consultation for me as a family member who needed to inform other family members of the results of the investigations. Other members of the team who carried out the initial examination and scan were also very kind and helpful too.
I saw Mr Khan almost 12 months ago at Hinchingbrooke hospital eye clinic and was extremely impressed with the way which he approached my diagnosis, examination and his excellent patient communication. In the time Mr Khan has been at our hospital he has been very supportive of the patients in his care, he always taken time out to explain everything to the patients and listen to any of the concerns and worries they may express. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he is a well liked and respected member of staff.
I was seen by Mr Khan on 23rd December and although he had to tell me I had some diabetic retinopathy, which was a total shock, he was very reassuring and arranged for me to go onto the cataract waiting list and requested an appointment for the Acute Clinic for approximately 10 weeks.
