Video: Can Age-Related Macular Degeneration get better without treatment?

In this video I discuss if Age-Related Macular Degeneration can get better without any treatment, and what is the problem with not treating wet AMD.

If we can pick up your wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration early we can treat you very effectively. Partly because there are small blood vessels that are required to be reversed. If they take hold of your eye and actually increase in size, then unfortunately we need to – before they bleed –  give you lots of treatment to trying to encourage them to shrink.

So the earlier we are able to treat your Macular Degeneration, the more effective we tend to be.

Now unfortunately we do have some patients who leave it too long and those blood vessels can bleed and then scar. And unfortunately our treatments that we have available to us at the moment aren’t particularly effective when that has happened.

And that’s the take-home message: If you miss the window of opportunity to treatment you can develop irreversible visual loss and you can lose the central part of your vision quite quickly – and that’s why I urge you to see an ophthalmologist if you are at all worried about this.

You can ring the number at the end video and we can discuss all of that in greater detail.
