Video: What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

In this video, I explain how we know if you have diabetic retinopathy.

This is an interesting question. Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy often not there. That’s why we have to look at patients on a regular basis to make sure that they don’t develop problems that can lead to blindness.

And this is one of the commonest causes of blindness of people who are working. It’s a problem that’s often underestimated and we are addressing that. But monitoring people regularly identifies disease which sometimes doesn’t have symptoms.

Unfortunately, if you develop symptoms of diabetic retinopathy, you probably have quite advanced disease and we need to obviously treat you with that in mind.

Now if you come and see me, we’ll diagnose your diabetic retinopathy and make sure that you don’t have any signs of vision-threatening disease. If you do, you’ll get prompt treatment straightaway.

If you want to discuss what those options are, then feel free to ring the number at the end of the video and we will discuss them in further detail.
